Aluminum and Alzheimer's Disease

Large amounts of aluminum are found usually in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease. This has led others to think that the disease is caused by the use of aluminum pots and pans, or oral ingestion of antacids or antiperspirants with aluminum.

It is a nice idea, but one with no scientific basis. Professor Luigi Amaducci Department of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Florence, said that other patients dealing with Alzheimer's disease, non-aluminum plaques inthe brain, which rules out this metal as the cause of the disease.

"It was some concern in recent years that dietary aluminum can to Alzheimer's disease or senile dementia in the elderly. This concern arises from the fact that greater levels of aluminum in the brains of people die as Alzheimer's disease brain are found, of people dying from other causes, "said Dr. Myron Winick, director of the Institute of Food Research,Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia Encyclopedia of Nutrition.

"It is now widely recognized that the aluminum deposits in the brain probably not the cause of the disease, but a consequence. It is known that cells die in particular regions of the brain in Alzheimer's patients and probably is the aluminum - deposited on the ruins after a cell dies. Aluminum is relatively common in the crust, and is far to the leftdistributed throughout the world, "said Winick.

"The aluminum content in groundwater and drinking water are taken up very high in some regions of the world, but there is no greater incidence of Alzheimer's disease among residents of these areas," Winick.

The end result of Alzheimer's disease is death. As time progresses, mental deterioration to the point that the patient is bedridden and unable to care for themselves. Many die from malnutrition or infections. This can happen, aYears after receipt of the disease.

"The course of the disease, which eventually lead to a deterioration of the rest of the nervous system and other parts of the body and the loss of control over bladder and bowel, may vary from one to 20 years range. It can cut life expectancy by contributing to the death another cause, such as pneumonia or heart or kidney failure, "said the editors of Consumer Guide's Family Health & Medical Guide.

"This devastating disease has a tremendousemotional and physical burden on other family members, and if the approval is necessary at a nursing home or any other such facility, as it often does is sadness in the family, often exacerbated by feelings of guilt, "revealed Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the best treatment.
